How To Lose 20 Pounds And Keep It Off For Good
Anyone can lose weight and it's not all that difficult to lose twenty pounds once you set your mind to it. Even though that much weight can seem daunting, once you decide to do it, the weight seems to come off easily. The problem comes after you've lost the weight because it's so easy to put it all back on and then some. So, more important than simply learning how to lose 20 pounds is how to lose it and keep it off over the long haul.
If you've been trying to lose weight, you might wonder why I say it's not that difficult. The main reason is because I've probably lost the very same twenty pounds at least 10 times - and probably more - during my adult lifetime. Yes, that's right. I've pretty much been a yo-yo dieter for as long as I can remember. And I've found what experts claim to be exactly true for me - when you lose weight through traditional dieting, you gain it back plus a few more pounds and you actually end up fatter than before you ever dieted.
This notion of being fatter than when you started is due to wrecking your metabolism by dieting too much. With traditional diets, you usually lose a lot more muscle than fat. That's why you see so many people who lose weight but they still have their problem areas. They just have a smaller version of the same problem they had before. When you've gone through a diet like this and then stop following it, you do gain weight faster because your metabolism has slowed down so much... it just can't burn off as many calories as it used to.
So, I believe the key to keeping off those 20 pounds is to not lose them so fast to begin with. You didn't gain them in a week so don't expect to lose them that fast either. By taking your time and doing it the right way, you'll be able to keep the weight off for good and improve your lifestyle habits and overall health along the way.
How quickly can you lose 20 pounds? Well, this last time it took me a full year to do it BUT I feel that I'll be able to keep it off. In reality, I lost most of the weight during the beginning stages and have been maintaining for the remainder of the year. I still want to lose another 15 to 20 pounds total and plan to do that much quicker - but not so quickly that it cannot be kept off.
The key is establishing new habits that you can continue long after the dieting is over. You want to continue to eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise. Combined, diet and exercise can help you maintain your new weight and improve your health in general. According to most experts, a good goal is to lose about 1% of your body weight per week. Based on these guidelines you can determine approximately how long it should take you to lost 20 pounds. Usually you lose more in the first couple of weeks and then it slows down to the 1% of body weight amount.
If you're serious about learning how to lose 20 pounds or more, it's important that you follow a reputable plan that's right for you. There are many great programs available and most of them can work well. You just have to find the one that best matches your personality and style. The most important thing is to just pick one and then stick with it.
